Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (M.U.T.C.D.)

The 2003 Edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) contains standards for traffic control devices that regulate, warn, and guide road users along the highways and byways in all 50 States. Traffic control devices are important because they optimize traffic performance, promote uniformity nationwide, and help improve safety by reducing the number and severity of traffic crashes.

The effective date of the Federal Register Final Rule for the 2003 MUTCD was December 22, 2003. States have 2 years to adopt the MUTCD changes. The adoption date deadline expired December 22, 2005.

On December 1, 2004, the Final Rule for Revision No. 1 (24-hour pharmacy signing) to the 2003 MUTCD was published in the Federal Register.

On December 21, 2007, the Final Rule for Revision No. 2 (sign retroreflectivity) to the 2003 MUTCD was published in the Federal Register.
