LRT Signals Engineer

Are you a professional engineer with a strong progressive background working in railroad signal design and maintenance? If so we want you “all aboard!” joining the City of Edmonton’s Light Rail Transit Section as a LRT Signals Engineer.


As the LRT Signals Engineer your expertise will be applied as you work on exciting projects that keep the existing LRT line operating! You will be seen as the subject matter expert in signals engineering supporting various contractors who provide preventative maintenance and repair services for the LRT signalling systems.  At the end of the day you will have played a huge role in ensuring that the LRT’s signal system operates effectively to ensure a safe and reliable ride for the citizens of Edmonton.  

Reporting to the Senior LRT Signal Engineer your key accountabilities will be the following:


  • Play a key role in testing and commissioning, managing system operation reviews as well as installation inspections on he CBTC system
  • Enhance the safety, reliability, and operational efficiency of the signal systems by researching, initiating designs and implementing modifications or upgrades
  • Develop and manage the preventative maintenance programs; and developing and administering various construction and services contracts
  • Provide supervisory guidance to contractors involved in maintaining the signals equipment and electronic control systems
  • Approve reports and work related to modifications, repairs, maintenance, specifications, drawings and incident/accident investigations related to the LRT signal system. 
  • Assist with performing life cycle analysis and monitoring LRT Signal System Infrastructure to achieve optimum service and safety levels
  • Manage and coordinate capital projects. Identifying and prioritizing investments in the existing infrastructure to ensure the LRT signals systems continues to serve LRT operations in an safe, efficient and reliable manner
  • Develop and implement testing and commissioning programs on new or modified systems to ensure they operate safely
  • Develop procedures, standards, and practices for LRT operations, maintenance, consultants and contractors to ensure smooth functioning of LRT signal systems and preparing various specifications, reports and correspondence
  • Participate in engineering and technical meetings, seminars, and conferences; and liaise with other Transit agencies and properties, to foster an atmosphere of information and experience exchange

  • Completion of B.Sc. degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering from a recognized university
  • Membership with APEGA as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or eligible for membership as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA
  • Minimum of 4 year’s experience in railroad signal design, construction and maintenance
  • Experience in managing projects, administering contracts, estimating project costs, and preparing budgets
  • Competent in using MS Office suite and computer control and maintenance systems
  • Ability to develop and maintain business relationship with various maintenance contractors, consultants, parts suppliers, and problem solve
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially report writing
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license or operators licensing equivalent recognized by the Operator Licensing and Vehicle Control Regulation, Alta. Reg. 320/2002"
  • Applicants will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the successful applicant to obtain business auto insurance.
  • An original Police Information Check or Certified Criminal Record Check issued within the past 6 months that is satisfactory to the employer will be required before starting in the position.  The new hire will be required to obtain this check from Edmonton Police Services or a local RCMP detachment. Please note, this may take up to 3 weeks to process


Hours of Work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday-Friday. Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of variable hours of work program.


Salary Range: 91M, Salary Grade PE2:  $68,977- $98,540 (Annually). Those individuals not meeting the years of experience qualifications or those without the Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation may be considered for the position at a lower Salary Grade: PE1, $55,048 - $78,646 (Annually)
