TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN

JOB PURPOSE AND SUMMARY
Performs semi-skilled maintenance duties involved in the inspection, modification, maintenance and/or repair of traffic signal systems and their associated components under general supervision.
KEY OR TYPICAL TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Ability to perform a wide variety of skilled duties involving the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems and equipment related to street lights, traffic signals, automated traffic management systems, battery back-up systems, traffic signal network communication devices, video detection systems, CCTV, lighted crosswalks, building lighting, and high voltage lighting. A typical way to obtain knowledge, skills, and abilities would be one year of journey-level experience in electrical work and specialized training in installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signal control devices.
Operate a variety of tools, circuit testing and motor vehicle equipment including a bucket truck to install, maintain and repair traffic signal, street lights, and flashing beacon/crosswalk sign systems.
Troubleshoots and replaces various parts within the traffic signal control cabinet, e.g. load switches, relays, isocards, and detectors; programs the microprocessor within the controller for timing of the intersection; programs conflict monitors; schedules and performs preventive maintenance on traffic signal equipment, including the cleaning of the controller and control cabinets, and checking the timing, detectors, and loops;
Prepare written reports and maintain logs and records on a variety work completed.
Communicate all routine traffic/street light information to internal and external personnel concerning service requests and operational activities in a professional manner.
Operates a variety of equipment (man-lifts, trucks, tools, etc.) to perform installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signal systems, makes approved splices, pulls cable, solders, terminates cables.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED. Preferably two (2) years experience in traffic signal installation, operation and maintenance. Possession of an IMSA Level II or III Traffic Signal Technician is highly desirable. Experience with TS2 traffic signal gear and components are highly desirable. Ability to take and pass California State Electrician Exam within one (1) year. Must have valid Driver's License and clean driving record.
Ability to prepare written reports, and maintain logs and records of data; follow written and oral instructions and to express ideas effectively orally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external personnel.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work.
Ability to work outdoors for extended periods under unfavorable weather conditions. Willingness to work scheduled and emergency overtime; be available on call as required; wear appropriate safety equipment/uniforms; work at night and at heights of 30-40 feet in a bucket truck, and in heavy traffic. Must be willing to travel.
Also this position requires independent body mobility to stand and move heavy traffic signal gear and equipment. Additionally, the incumbent will be required to perform lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds in weight, and walk on uneven ground or wet surfaces.
