Job Description Summary
The Hiring Salary Range for a Signal Technician I is $42,994 – $63,826
The Hiring Salary Range for a Signal Technician II is $53,767 – $79,819
The city will consider under filling this position as Signal Technician I if candidate does not possess all of the qualifications for a Signal Technician II.
To qualify for a Signal Technician I, the candidate will need a minimum of one year related experience and an IMSA Level I Traffic Signal Technician certification. Upon hire, the selected individual will have 12 months to obtain an IMSA Traffic Signal Level II. Until that time, the selected individual would be hired as a Signal Technician I until he or she successfully obtains the required certification.
This position is open until filled.
The Signal Technician II performs highly skilled advanced level work in the installation, maintenance, operation and repair of electronic traffic control devices and street lighting. Signal Technician II will function in a lead capacity to Signal Technician I. Participates in new and existing construction/modification projects and performs inspections. Performs regularly scheduled traffic signal and street lighting maintenance and provides information as requested. This position requires working outdoors in extreme temperatures.
The ideal candidate will possess experience in construction, maintenance and troubleshooting of traffic signal components.
The ideal candidate will also possess experience using an electronic work order/inventory system.

Essential Functions
Facilitates the repair and maintenance of traffic signals by studying operational characteristics and signal operating plans. Independently performs repairs on various traffic control equipment, maintain, monitor, troubleshoot traffic signal systems.
Provides testing and analysis of traffic control devices and street lighting.. Repairs and replaces conduit, wiring and other traffic signal equipment. Provides safe work zones for themselves and the public at all times.
Performs traffic signal work, street lighting work, troubleshoots traffic signal and street light malfunctions and responds to emergency calls. Performs inspections to identify traffic signal equipment in need of maintenance and/or repair.
Identifies problems, and associated equipment. Replaces signal indications and street lights. Performs routine preventative maintenance on traffic signals and street lights.
Regularly schedule maintenance on all traffic signals as assigned. Must be knowledgeable of NEMA TS-2 environments.
Track all work activities using the City’s work order system.
Installs traffic control devices; directs and controls traffic during normal schedule, evenings, weekends and special events. Receives and responds to trouble calls during normal schedule, evenings, weekends and special events. Perform stand-by duties on a two week rotation.
Requirements
Formal Education/Knowledge: Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Experience: Minimum three-year experience in a related field.
Certifications and Other Requirements: Arizona Operator’s Driver’s License, IMSA Traffic Signal Level II.
Reading: Work requires the ability to read work orders, blue prints and schematics.
Math: Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Writing: Work requires the ability to write reports.
Managerial: Complex – Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.
Policy/Decision Making: Moderate – The employee normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. There is a choice of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. More complex work as well as decisions with more significant impacts may be reviewed prior to being finalized.
Technical Skills: Broad Application – Work requires advanced skills and knowledge in approaches and systems, which affect the design and implementation of programs, solutions for complex issues, and/or processes. Independent judgment and decision-making abilities may be necessary to apply technical skills effectively.
Interpersonal/Human Relations Skills: Moderate – In addition to the sharing of information, interactions at this level may also include providing advice to others outside direct reporting relationships on specific problems or general policies/procedures. In many of the interactions, contacts may require the consideration of different points of view to reach agreement. Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas.
12 Month Objectives
- Become proficient in performing monthly maintenance at all signalized intersections within twelve months of employment.
- Become proficient in performing street light troubleshooting and maintenance within six months of employment.
- Become proficient with the Lucity work order and inventory system with twelve months of employment.
- Successfully terminate a traffic signal cabinet during a rewire of an existing traffic signal within twelve months of employment.
