The City of Chula Vista is seeking a highly motivated Traffic Signal & Lighting Technician II to join their team!

This is the full journey level class in the Traffic Signal and Lighting Technician series and has the ability to perform the full range of duties assigned with only occasional instruction or assistance as unique situations arise. This class is distinguished from the Traffic Signal and Lighting Technician I in that it performs journey level work with a high level of independence and may provide technical and functional guidance to subordinate staff.

Essential Functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: install low and high voltage street lighting systems; troubleshoot and diagnoses traffic signal and streetlight problems; make effective repairs; tune digital and analog controllers to obtain optimum operation; perform installation, operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair or replacement of various traffic signal components to include: traffic signal poles, traffic signal & pedestrian indications, cabinets and wiring, 170E controllers, vehicle detectors, video detection cameras, emergency vehicle preemption systems and intelligent transportation system (ITS) to include, but not limited to: Advanced Transportation controllers (ATC), IP Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras, variable message signs (VMS) and fiber optic interconnect systems; operate computer system associated with programming, monitoring and operating traffic signal, street light and interconnect systems; act to coordinate with Construction Inspections Staff regarding street light, traffic signal and other electrical improvements to ensure specification compliance; diagnose malfunctions including traffic sensing mechanisms, circuits, controllers, switches, relays, fuses, battery backup systems, power supplies, electronic controls and other ancillary devices; maintain upgrades and retrofit street light luminaries, poles and wiring; mark out conduit and service wires for Underground Service Alert (USA); troubleshoot and repair interconnect and fiber communication lines; install firmware updates to traffic signal devices and equipment as needed; troubleshoot and maintain traffic signal IP network connectivity; implement updates as technology developments are released and become available; work with contractors during new traffic signal and streetlight installations projects; test new equipment; operate an aerial bucket, or scissors lift type vehicle skillfully and safely; divert traffic flow; properly place cones, barricades and warning devices to direct traffic flow at job site; operate hand and pneumatic tools, as required in performance of regular duties; respond to emergency situations involving traffic control systems, street lights and electrical connections in off-hours as required; maintain daily records of work accomplished, accurately use tools, materials, supplies and equipment; use work management software to capture data electronically and generate reports; participate in the City’s after-hour and weekend callback program; respond to emergencies involving traffic control systems, street lights and electrical connections; build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service; perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: two (2) years of responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of electrical devices and equipment AND training equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college courses in electronic technology or a related field.

License or Certificate
Possession of a valid California driver’s license. Current valid certification as a Level II Traffic Signal (Field) Technician by the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) is highly desirable.
