The County of Riverside seeks candidates to fill positions throughout Riverside County. A list of eligible candidates will be established to fill current and future vacancies. This position will remain open until filled.
The County of Riverside’s Transportation department seeks a Traffic Signal Technician to join the Highway Operations Division of the Transportation Department throughout the County of Riverside. The Traffic Signal Technician is a journey level classification and is responsible for performing a full range of maintenance and repairs on traffic signal systems and highway lighting units. Incumbents may assist in the training of subordinates performing plan check reviews and inspecting and testing signal and lighting installations. The role requires both independent work and collaboration within a team.

The ideal candidate will also have experience with traffic control, know how to operate a crane, and will possess a valid California Commercial Class A or B Driver’s license.

The Traffic Signal Technician is distinguished from the Senior Traffic Signal Technician classification in that the latter is the advanced journey level performing assignments of above average difficulty and may act as a project lead.

The work schedule for this position is a 4/10 schedule (6am-4:30pm), with a rotating 24/7 on-call responsibility for one week every 10 weeks.

Meet the Team!
The Transportation Department is responsible for planning, designing, funding, building, operating and maintaining all roads, bridges, and transportation facilities within the unincorporated County territory.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Check, service, troubleshoot, and repair traffic signal controllers to insure correct timing and operation, make minor adjustments and repairs, or replace controller when necessary.• Check and repair intersection and sign lighting, and test and replace traffic signal lamps; paint and repair signal and lighting hardware; pour and finish concrete bases for traffic signals.

• Set traffic counters to obtain traffic volumes, speeds and vehicle classifications; use computer software to obtain data.

• Perform a variety of other electrical repairs and installations; maintain routine daily records, and prepare reports as necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: One year of performing traffic signal systems maintenance.

Knowledge of: The principles of electrical circuitry and electronics as they relate to traffic signal and lighting equipment; the tools, materials, and methods used in installing and maintaining traffic signal equipment; state and other standards governing placement of traffic signals, signs, and street lighting.

Ability to: Understand traffic lighting installation plans and specifications and inspect construction projects for compliance; use computers and software programs; maintain detailed inventory records and prepare reports; train others in the operation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signal equipment; establish and maintain effective working relationships; work after hours and on weekends on emergency repairs.

License: Possession of a valid California Driver’s license is required and must obtain a valid Commercial Class B California Driver’s License within six months from date of hire.

Physical Requirements: The employee will regularly work in outside weather conditions and is exposed street/road traffic. Must have the ability to lift 75 pounds and work at heights of at least 45 feet.

For those positions designated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) as safety-sensitive, applicants are required to complete a DOT mandated alcohol and drug-screening. (A positive test or refusal to test during the past two years will disqualify an applicant from consideration for County employment). Reference checks from former DOT regulated employers are also required. Applicants must submit a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) driving record prior to hire.

Employees in safety-sensitive positions are subject to DOT alcohol/drug testing in the following situations: random, reasonable suspicion/cause, return-to-duty, and post-accident.
