As the Traffic Signal Technician, you will maintain the operations, repairs, locating infrastructure of traffic signal intersections, and assist with Intelligent Traffic Signal (ITS) equipment.

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED 

Experience

  • Three (3) years of experience in electronics, electrical, and/or traffic signal maintenance and repair

Other Requirements

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver’s license by the time of hire
  • Technicians are required to be on-call one week each month and respond to traffic signal call-outs and perform emergency repairs.
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver with endorsements within six (6) months of hire 
  • Must possess an OSHA-approved Aerial Lift Certification within one (1) year of hire
  • Must have Traffic Signal level I IMSA Certification and/or Level I Roadway Lighting Certification

Our Preferred Candidate has

  • Two (2) years of direct experience in traffic signal maintenance, repair, or traffic signal construction
  • Associate’s Degree or apprenticeship in a closely related field
  • Must possess a Traffic Signal level II IMSA Certification within two (2) years of hire

Essential Job TasksThe tasks listed are a representation and not an all-inclusive list of essential job tasks for this position.

  • Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on malfunctioning traffic signal intersections and ITS equipment
  • Repairs consist of replacing faulty/damaged wiring, signal/ITS equipment, and ensuring the signal is operating at optimal efficiency for the safety of drivers and pedestrians 
  • Reviews plans and specifications to ensure traffic signals are built per MCDOT/Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards
  • Works with contractors to provide technical information and solutions to problems 
  • Follows all safety procedures; uses personal protective equipment (PPE) and practices per MCDOT policy 
  • Documents maintenance and trouble call-outs into Cartegraph (operations asset management software)
  • Responds to daily AZ811 tickets to locate underground traffic signals and ITS fiber optics facilities
  • Proficient computer skills as it pertains to hardware and software for the programming of traffic signals and ITS equipment/devices
  • Places cones and traffic control devices to provide for a safe work environment
  • Inspects traffic signal and intelligent transportation systems work performed by contractors
  • Coordinate with contractors and other utility organizations on traffic signal concerns or outages

Working ConditionsThe traffic signal technician primarily works alone and outdoors in temperature ranges of 20 degrees to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, including work in the rain and overnight. During the workday, the technician is expected to climb ladders up to 12 feet, climb into and out of an aerial lift basket, drive distances up to 50 miles, walk up to 500 feet at a time to inspect detection conduit and mark underground utilities. You will be required to get up and down from ground level to access wiring in junction boxes and stand for up to 30 minutes while observing signal cabinet operations and repairing traffic signal equipment. The position requires the ability to work under pressure in intersections with malfunctioning traffic signal equipment and with active accident scenes where vehicle traffic is heavy. During storms, the technician may be expected to address multiple signal calls to different locations requiring, in some cases, working throughout the night after working a normal daytime schedule. Additionally, the technician is expected to work in signal cabinets and heads in close proximity to voltages up to 120 VAC. The technician is expected to be able to lift and move traffic signal heads of up to 50 pounds without assistance, to pull cabling in a conduit running up to 200 feet, removing and installing junction boxes of up to 45 pounds, and assist other technicians in the lifting and installation of signal poles weighing up to 150 pounds.Selection ProcedureThe Maricopa County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates considered to be the most highly qualified. Those selected will be assessed based on the evaluation of listed education and experience. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a list provided by Human Resources.

Typically, successful candidates are hired at a salary rate up to the midpoint of the range, based on relevant experience, internal equity, and budgetary allowances.
