I chose to serve on the International Municipal Signal Association Board because IMSA has meant a great deal to me throughout my career, and I felt it was important to give back to an organization that has given me so much. Serving on the Board opened my eyes to how IMSA truly functions at the national level and how the decisions we make directly affect our members, our sections and the industry we serve.
I’ve gained invaluable leadership experience and formed lasting relationships with people who genuinely care about education, safety and doing things the right way. I strongly encourage others to step up and serve, because Board involvement is a powerful way to help shape IMSA’s future while growing both personally and professionally.
I chose to serve as a Board member because I want to be involved in the future of IMSA. A few years ago, the Interational Office put out a call for help in the office due to a massive backlog of test processing and paperwork (at that time) and I was fortunate that I could go to Florida for a week and man a desk. While I was there, I quickly realized that the staff were really dedicated to the mission of IMSA, and they were all going above and beyond the call of duty. While the days were long and work was hard, I didn’t want to leave and decided that week that I wanted to stay involved and support the staff as much as they supported me.
While I am currently the newest Board member, I have learned quickly to think globally and not locally, most of the Board’s discussions and decisions affect all the United States, Canada and many times staff as well.
I love to see the younger generations at conferences and events wanting to get involved. I hope that they maintain that passion, and some do as I did and want to eventually serve on the Board as they are our future.
Being nominated to serve on the IMSA Board of Directors has been a true honor. Upon accepting the nomination, I committed myself to upholding the mission and By-laws of the organization, with the sincere hope of making a meaningful difference for our membership.
Serving on the Board has been an enlightening and rewarding experience. It has given me a deeper appreciation for the role the Board plays and the positive impact its work can have on the association as a whole. Through this service, I have had the opportunity to meet many members and gain a broader understanding of our various sections. These relationships have allowed me to better understand the concerns, perspectives and needs of our membership.
I would strongly encourage any member who values the mission and future of the association to consider serving on the Board. It is a unique opportunity to contribute, learn, and help guide IMSA in a positive and meaningful direction.
Despite being long retired, I believe the mission of IMSA is still valid for the younger generations hoping to build their own careers in the fields that IMSA represents and I have continued to volunteer my time for that purpose. Having witnessed the changes and challenges that IMSA has faced the last few years, I felt that serving on the Board at this time was the best way to contribute my volunteer time and help create the next chapter of the association.
Board participation has afforded me the opportunity to learn the inner workings of an organization of this size. How all the moving pieces in the background appear to function seamlessly on the outside. I’ve also grown a network of peers that would not have been possible otherwise.
I would encourage any member that has a vision for this association, whether shared or otherwise, and has the passion and the volunteer time to give, to step up and have your voice heard at the Board level.
My reasons for choosing to serve on the board are twofold. First, the traffic signal industry has been incredibly good to me. I entered a field I didn’t even know existed and built a rewarding career because of it. Giving back to IMSA felt like a natural and meaningful way to support an industry that has given me so much.
Second, I was motivated by the opportunity to help IMSA continue evolving to meet the needs of a changing industry. The organization’s transition created a chance to focus on progress, innovation and long‑term relevance. Training and education are essential to our future, and strengthening these areas is critical to supporting the professionals who rely on IMSA to grow their skills and knowledge.
Serving on the board has reinforced to me that every decision has purpose, and while progress can be incremental, meaningful solutions come from persistence and collaboration. I remain optimistic and committed to helping move initiatives forward and delivering results that benefit our members and the industry as a whole.
Ultimately, IMSA’s success depends on member engagement. We need fresh perspectives and emerging leaders at every level to ensure IMSA remains strong, relevant, and impactful for the next 130 years and beyond.
