Signal Technician II
Department: Public Works – Traffic
Starting Salary Range: $50,983.00 – $60,687.00 Annual ($24.51 – $29.17 Hour)
Performs specialized electrical/electronic technical work related to traffic management/control systems, communication, illumination, or traffic data collection devices/systems. Work involves technical expertise in developing, installing, testing, programming, and repairing of electrical/electronic devices/systems. Work may require working in heavy traffic, after hours, on weekends, and holidays.
EXAMPLES OF WORK TO BE PERFORMED:
- Troubleshoot, install, remove, replace, and repair traffic signal, school flasher, and street light equipment.
- Inspects traffic signal equipment at operational intersections to ensure signals and school zone flashers are operating as programmed.
- Responds to trouble calls on equipment malfunctions; identifies problems; repairs or replaces faulty equipment;
- Properly documents trouble calls and problem resolution. Assist with the inventorying of materials and equipment.
- Programming and deploying message boards for special events or emergencies, as needed.
- Routinely patrols streets to identify traffic signals that may need repair.
- Performs routine maintenance on traffic control devices and other equipment.
- Replaces damaged parts such as load switches, relays, flashers, batteries, bulbs, heads, and documents process.
- Responds to emergency calls during regular business hours and performs a mandatory rotating after-hours on-call duty.
- Make recommendations and carry out plans with the approval of the supervisor.
- Trains and mentors other signal technicians.
- Creates and maintains daily work records, maintenance history and work orders.
- Installs and maintains overhead traffic signs that mount on traffic signal poles, by using a bucket truck.
- Flags traffic and installs work zone signage and barricades needed to perform work safely at job sites.
- Implements safety procedures at job sites.
- May be required to remove debris, fallen trees and limbs; replace street signs during or after hazardous weather or other emergencies.
- Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge and ability to follow City policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of the common principles, practices, equipment, materials, and methods used in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices.
- Knowledge of work zone safety requirements and procedures.
- Knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Knowledge of occupational safety and health rules, regulations, practices, and procedures.
- Knowledge of computers and computer-related software.
- Skill in oral and written communications.
- Ability to maintain accurate and complete records.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED or equivalent, and a minimum of 3 years of experience.
- Must possess a State of Texas Class A CDL Driver’s License.
- Work Zone Traffic Control Certification.
- IMSA Signals Level I.
DESIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
- 5+ years of experience.
- IMSA Signals Level II.
- Electrician License.

The physical requirements of this position.
- Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
The visual acuity requirements include color, depth perception, and field vision.
- The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes.
