JOB CLASSIFICATION: Signal Technician I SALARY: $46,243.00 – $55,045.00
DEPARTMENT: Public Works – Streets Full-time / Non-Exempt
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under the general direction of the Traffic Supervisor, this position will assist with constructing, installing, testing, inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining traffic signals, school zone flashers, and streetlights. Assists with setting up controllers and installing vehicle detections systems, communication equipment, and other traffic signal equipment. Installs and maintains traffic signs on all traffic signal poles and arms. The signal technician I, should be capable of performing basic signal tasks with supervision. Will also be responsible for assisting in the operations of the Traffic Management Center.
EXAMPLES OF WORK TO BE PERFORMED:
- Troubleshoot, install, remove, replace, and repair traffic signal, school flasher, and street light equipment.
- Inspects traffic signal equipment at operational intersections to ensure signals and school zone flashers are operating as programmed.
- Assists with responding to trouble calls on equipment malfunctions; identifies problems; repairs or replaces faulty equipment; properly documents trouble calls and problem resolution. Assist with the inventorying of materials and equipment.
- Performs line locates for underground traffic signals and street lighting equipment as needed.
- Assists with programming deploying message boards for special events or emergencies, as needed.
- Routinely patrols streets to identify traffic signals that may need repair.
- Assists with performing routine maintenance on traffic control devices and other equipment.
- Assists in replacing damaged parts such as load switches, relays, flashers, batteries, bulbs, heads and documents process.
- Responds to emergency calls during regular business hours and may also perform a mandatory rotating after hours on-call duty.
- Make recommendations and carry out plans with the approval of the supervisor.
- Creates and maintains daily work records, maintenance history and work orders.
- Installs and maintains overhead traffic signs that mount on traffic signal poles, by using a bucket truck.
- Flags traffic and installs work zone signage and barricades needed to perform work safely at job sites.
- Implements safety procedures at job sites.
- Trims trees that obstruct traffic signals and signs.
- May be required to remove debris, fallen trees and limbs; replace street signs during or after hazardous weather or other emergencies.
- Assists in the day to day operations of the TMC
- Other Duties as assigned under the Traffic Division.
OTHER DUTIES:
- May be required to work weekends or after hours to support traffic management and operations for special events or emergency situations.
- May be required to assist with setting up traffic control or detours necessary for special events and emergency situations.
- Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.
- May work an on-call rotation and overtime as required, once becoming a certified IMSA Traffic Signal Level I and after a six month probation period.
- Must live within 45 minutes of Mansfield city limits.
- Will be required to respond to emergency/after hour calls in a timely manner.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge and ability to follow City policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of the common principles, practices, equipment, materials, and methods used in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices.
- Knowledge of TxDOT work zone safety requirements and procedures.
- Knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Knowledge of occupational safety and health rules, regulations, practices, and procedures.
- Knowledge of computers and computer related software.
- Skill in oral and written communications.
- Skill in basic mathematical calculations.
- Ability to maintain accurate and complete records.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- IMSA Work Zone or ability to obtain within 6 months of date of hire.
- IMSA Traffic Signal I preferred or the ability to obtain within 6 months of date of hire.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical agility test, criminal background check and MVR check.
- Must possess a State of Texas Class B CDL Driver’s License within 12 months of employment.
