Position Description

ENTRY SALARY:
TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN I: $51,077.75
TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN II: $56,313.21
TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN III: $59,128.87
Candidates will be eligible to be hired at the level that aligns with experience and licensing.

POSITION OPEN UNTIL FILLEDUnder general supervision, the Traffic Signal Technician I skilled Electronic and Electrical work in the construction, installation, maintenance, renovation, and repair of traffic signal control devices, structures, networks for a Traffic Control System.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions: — Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Constructs, installs, maintains, renovates, and repairs traffic signal control devices, structures, networks and associated electronic and electrical related components associated with the traffic control system of the City.
  • Verifies, checks, and evaluates timings in controller to ensure good traffic flow; maintains and updates any vehicle detections.
  • Maintains and monitors all equipment; cleans, checks proper voltage, evaluates field wiring, inspects signal head, performs cosmetic upkeep, and calculates quality of flow of traffic.
  • Handles, addresses, and responds to various trouble calls for damaged equipment, problematic mechanical components, or malfunctioning signal equipment.
  • Uses, operates, and performs activities on computers, motor vehicles, tools, test equipment, and parts, to effectively perform assignments assuring the continued operation of the Traffic Control System.
  • Drafts, prepares, and maintains records, equipment, tools and vehicles as needed.
  • Performs stand-by or “On Call” duty for after hour response within one hour of call out; handles emergency situation on a rotating schedule.
  •  Performs related tasks as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN I:

  • A valid State driver’s license is required.
  • Certification from Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic or ability to obtain within one year of hire date.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a forklift license within one year of hire date.
  • Certification from the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) for Traffic Signal Technician Level I or ability to obtain within one year of hire date.
  • Does this position require a Commercial Driver’s License?  Yes
    Type: Ability to obtain and maintain a Class A or B CDL based on area of assignment within one (1) year of hire.

TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN II:

  • A valid State driver’s license is required.
  • International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Level II Certificate is required and meets the position requirements of 3 years of traffic signal operations experience.
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Field Inspector I Certificate is required.
  • Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Intermediate Temporary Maintenance of Traffic Certificate is required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Forklift Operator’s License within one (1) year of hire date.
  • Does this position require a Commercial Driver’s License? ? Yes
  • Type: Ability to obtain and maintain a Class A or B CDL based on area of assignment within one (1) year of hire.

TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN III:

  • A valid State driver’s license is required.
  • International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Level III Certificate is required and meets the position requirements of 5 years of traffic signal operations experience.
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Field Inspector I Certificate is required.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Forklift Operator’s License within one (1) year of hire date.

Education and Experience:

TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN I: Associate degree in electronics PLUS two (2) years of experience in electronics or electric work; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN II:  Associate degree in Electronics AND three (3) years experience in traffic signal tech work, electronics, electric work, or network technology; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN III: Associate degree in Electronics AND five (5) years experience in traffic signal tech work, electronics, electric work, or network technology; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
