Traffic Operations Engineering Technician

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Transportation Manager or Traffic Engineer, this technical position assists in operations and evaluations for the safe and efficient flow of traffic throughout the City. Including traffic signal timing and coordination, evaluation of traffic safety and operations, traffic count, speed and flow data, reviewing accident reports, maintaining computer database files and traffic information. Requires some independent judgment and decision-making with input from the Transportation Manager and Traffic Engineer.

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collects field data obtained by manual or machine counts, compiles and summarizes data in a written report format to accomplish various types of traffic engineering studies such as traffic counts, spot speed studies, signal warrant studies and traffic signal timings.
  • Assists with the development of signal timings and coordination timings.
  • Investigates complaints concerning traffic conditions, problems and issues related to traffic flow or signal operations and takes corrective action as appropriate to address the situation and responds to the citizen.
  • Assists with configuration and troubleshooting field devices including traffic signal controllers; video, radar and loop detectors; CCTV cameras; field hardened managed ethernet switches; automated school flashing beacons; and variable message signs.
  • Assists with the review of traffic signal, signing, marking and traffic control plans.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of GIS systems, asset management and Accela as it relates to the Transportation Division.
  • Assists with traffic operations for special events.
  • May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, etc. to assist with traffic flow and operations for special events.
  • May be called to report to work for emergency situations.
  • Drives City and/or personal vehicle to perform essential functions of position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Compliance with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

Minimum: High school diploma or G.E.D.; 2-5 years of experience related to engineering, design, construction, traffic engineering or maintenance; or equivalent experience, education and training. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Desired: Associate degree in engineering, computer sciences, electrical or related field and experience with traffic flow and signal operations which provides the skills and abilities to apply the principles of traffic engineering.

Hiring Process

Compensation and Benefits

Hiring range is from $50,000-$62,952 dependent on qualifications and directly related experience. The City of Lenexa offers a comprehensive benefits package including:
