Traffic Systems Timing Specialist –works closely with the Traffic System Engineer to assist with all aspects of managing signal system timings such as, collecting field measurements and other data, calculating signal timing parameters, programming databases, and performing quality control & testing, field implementing signal timings and fine tuning. Programs MMU and uses IO-Logic statements to program controllers for unique signal operations and, acts as a lead in developing and implementing coordinated signal timings. Provides construction, inspection, and modifications support for traffic signals. Monitors signal operations and prepares reports as needed. Tracks system programming specifications to assure all modifications are logged and archived in a timely and readily available for review. Investigates and reports complaints related to traffic control devices and signal timings and assists with repairs and modifications as directed. Provides support to the arterial incident management and special event management functions of the Regional Traffic Management Center (RTMC), by remotely implementing temporary signal timing changes in response to incidents and congestion on the roadway system. Communicates clearly, effectively, and tactfully, orally and in writing with co- workers, supervisors, and the general public.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate/equivalent.
  • Minimum of four (4) years’ experience relating to signal system operation, including repair and maintenance of traffic devices and related communication equipment.
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience as IMSA Traffic Signal Level II Technician.
  • IMSA or ATSSA Work Zone Safety (Intermediate Training) Certification, IMSA Traffic Signal Level I, and Level II Certificate.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Knowledge/Abilities/Skills

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations concerning installation, placement and timing of traffic signal devices and other electronic traffic equipment.
  • Knowledge of principles of electronic troubleshooting, computer circuitry, and traffic control and coordination equipment.
  • Knowledge of schematic diagrams, and signal timing regulations.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb and descend equipment, ladders, steps, etc.
  • Ability to work at heights of 60+ feet; finger dexterity and hand coordination; ability to bend, stoop, and reach.5
  • Ability to distinguish colors and sounds.
  • Skill in installation, repair and maintenance of electronic traffic signal controllers, conflict monitors and detector units.
  • Skill in trouble shooting and diagnosing equipment malfunctions.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting traffic system design schematics.

Desired Skills

  • Associate’s degree or related vocational courses/training certifications, with related electronic experience desired.
  • Experience with ATMS. Now central signal system management platform or similar system.
  • Experience with Coordinated Signal System.
  • Experience with Naztec 980 controllers, Tru-Traffic and Synchro/Simtraffic software programs.
